The Division of Workers’ Compensation Offers Support to Avoid Fines, Protect Employees, and Save Money

Recent investigations into the healthcare industry reveal an opportunity to help these employers avoid fines, protect employees, and save money. Inpatient health facilities have the highest incidence of workplace injuries out of any type of workplace in the country, with several other healthcare segments ranking near the top.

The DOWC is invested in proactively empowering Colorado employers to achieve compliance and reduce insurance premiums. Educational resources and direct support are available.

Any business with employees operating in Colorado is required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Failure to meet this requirement can result in fines of up to $500 a day and leave the employer responsible for covering the full cost of an uninsured claim out-of-pocket. The average claim is around $10,000, with some claims reaching over $500,000.

Even with the best intentions, employers can fall out of compliance by misunderstanding requirements or misclassifying employees. The DOWC website contains information and resources for employers.

For employers that already carry workers’ compensation insurance, the DOWC’s Premium Cost Containment (PCC) program helps prevent injuries by providing free safety resources and guidance from risk management experts. Employers who are certified in the PCC program can receive up to 10% off of their workers’ compensation premium. Preventing workplace injuries keeps premiums low, improves employee satisfaction, and can help attract and retain talent.
