The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)’s Healthcare Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance Program and the Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Advisory Committee would like to announce a change to the deadline for Colorado required reporting into the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) reporting system for HAIs. During the committee’s meeting in August, the committee voted to modify the deadlines for reporting, which are effective as of the date of this communication.
- Previous to this date, the deadline for reporting of all HAIs reporting into NHSN in Colorado was 90 days following the identification of the condition. There were several challenges with this approach: (1) the 90-day Colorado reporting deadline was different than reporting deadlines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); (2) while CMS had a reporting deadline of a specific date for each quarter of reporting (e.g., May 15 for quarter 1 reporting), Colorado had a rolling reporting deadline (90 days following the condition); and (3) it was unclear if the 90-day Colorado reporting deadline for the reporting of surgical site infections (SSIs) was based on the procedure or onset of infection.
- Colorado-required reporting of all currently reportable HAIs into NHSN will now align with CMS reporting, with the exception of quarter 4 reporting (October 1 - December 31) for all healthcare facilities except outpatient dialysis facilities. Reporting deadlines are as follows:
- Quarter 1 (January - March): August 15
- Quarter 2 (April - June): November 15
- Quarter 3 (July - September): February 15
- Quarter 4 (October - December): April 15 (differing from CMS reporting deadline of May 15)
Outpatient dialysis facility reporting deadlines will be the same for CMS and the state of Colorado, as follows:
- Quarter 1 (January - March): June 30
- Quarter 2 (April - June): September 30
- Quarter 3 (July - September): December 31
- Quarter 4 (October - December): March 31
The quarter 4 reporting deadline differs between the state of Colorado and CMS due to the statute-mandated deadline for completion of the Colorado HAI Annual Disclosure Report, annually on July 15.
Attached please find an updated list of HAIs reportable to CDPHE via NHSN, which reflects the change in deadlines for reporting. CDPHE and the HAI Advisory Committee want to thank infection preventionists and other facility representatives for their diligent reporting over the years, and for your continued partnership. This blog publishes information typically sent to users of the Colorado Health Facilities Interactive (COHFI) system for health care entities regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Please note that COHFI is the official medium for business communication between the Department and licensed and/or Medicare/Medicaid certified health care entities. Health care entities should continue to monitor their email accounts routinely.
