The Healthcare Associated Infections Program at Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) would like to make you aware of two changes to the CDPHE required reporting into the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) reporting system for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). On May 16, 2018, the Board of Health voted to add two NHSN-reportable conditions to the Epidemic and Communicable Disease Control regulations (6 CCR 1009-1): catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia. These changes will go into effect on July 15, 2018.
The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) already requires reporting of CAUTIs and MRSA bacteremia by certain health care facilities via NHSN. The addition of CAUTIs and MRSA to the list of reportable conditions will not require any additional reporting from facilities already reporting CAUTI and/or MRSA bacteremia to NHSN for CMS purposes. These additions do not require facilities not currently reporting to begin doing so. The reporting requirement is fulfilled through CDPHE’s access to NHSN for those healthcare facilities that are already reporting CAUTI and/or MRSA bacteremia. For facilities to begin reporting data, facilities will need to confer rights to CDPHE to access NHSN for these conditions, and includes access to retrospective data as per CMS requirements.
***Please note a comprehensive notice with additional details was sent via NHSN to the assigned NHSN Facility Administrator.
This blog publishes information typically sent to users of the Colorado Health Facilities Interactive (COHFI) system for health care entities regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Please note that COHFI is the official medium for business communication between the Department and licensed and/or Medicare/Medicaid certified health care entities. Health care entities should continue to monitor their email accounts routinely.
