New Course Available on COTrain: "Extreme Heat: Preparing Your Healthcare Residents, Patients, and Clients”

To: Administrators, Directors and Staff

From:  Greg Schlosser, Branch Chief, Health Facility Education and Quality, Health Facilities & Emergency Services Division

Re:   NEW FREE COURSE: "Extreme Heat: Preparing Your Healthcare Residents, Patients, and Clients”

A new class, "Extreme Heat: Preparing Your Healthcare Residents, Patients, and Clients" is now live on COTrain. The course I.D. # is 1121335. We encourage you to share this class with your staff.

Extreme heat events in Colorado are increasing in duration, frequency, and intensity as a result of climate change. And we’re seeing the repercussions of that on the health of communities that, unfortunately, are not used to the heat, or not set up to deal with the heat. These accelerating changes have led to a rise in human exposure to harmful temperatures.

At the end of this module, you will understand:

  • Extreme heat and its impact on our bodies;
  • Heat illness, persons most at risk, and other populations of concern;
  • Steps to protecting your patients, residents, and clients from extreme heat;
  • Monitoring your weather online using National Weather Service (NWS) resources.
  • Components of an extreme heat emergency plan or annex.

Always as a reminder, our complete offering of training opportunities for providers can be found at:  HFEMSD Provider Training Catalog

For more information or if you have any questions, please reach out to Melanie Roth at 720-291-5929 or Melanie.Roth-Lawson@state.co.us.

New Firstline mobile app-antimicrobial stewardship in the palm of your hand

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) supports antimicrobial stewardship in all healthcare settings. Treatment guidelines that support appropriate use of antibiotics are a priority intervention that can help prescribers optimize antibiotic selection and duration and help antimicrobial stewardship programs to conduct prospective audit and feedback and preauthorization activities. CDPHE promotes Firstline as a source of stewardship-oriented treatment guidelines that can be adapted for use by facilities and prescribers in Colorado.

Children’s Hospital Colorado and Denver Health have partnered with Firstline to create a mobile app to support antimicrobial stewardship in Colorado. Firstline houses clinical pathways from Children’s Colorado and Denver Health, along with antimicrobial dosing information, pathogen information, infection prevention information, and more. It is intended for use in all clinical settings. The app is free to download, and is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as a web-based format.

No matter your specialty or practice, we are all stewards. We can all work together in keeping Colorado healthy, one antibiotic choice at a time.

How to Download:

Click here or go to https://firstline.org/colorado/ to find and download our app. Once downloaded, you can set your location to Denver Health and/or Children’s Colorado to access all of our materials. Once in the app, clicking on the Firstline logo in the top left corner will allow you to toggle between locations to access adult vs pediatric guidance.

Contact the Children’s Colorado Firstline group at michael.bozzella@childrenscolorado.org or contact the HAI/AR Program at cdphe_hai_ar@state.co.us for more information.

CDPHE’s Infection Prevention Program

Body of Message:

The American Health Care Association (AHCA) has partnered with the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) to set up a national forum for infection preventionists and infection prevention champions working in long-term care (LTC). The forum provides a platform to rapidly disseminate updates and resources about infections in LTC as they become available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), or Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA). The goal is to foster collaboration and sharing of experiences between IPs and other infection control champions in LTC. Participants will be encouraged to answer questions and share resources and tools.

If you are interested in participating, please complete this three-question survey to provide your name and email.

This is open to all LTC professionals focusing on infection prevention regardless of their infection prevention certification status or membership in either APIC or AHCA. To: All Stakeholders interested in House Bill 1294

From: HFEMSD

You are invited to participate in the Stakeholder Process for The House Bill 1294 review process. The House Bill 1294 Stakeholder Forum is an opportunity to promote dialogue and transparency for issues of interest and concern to all licensed healthcare facilities. This forum is statutorily required for such purpose and had been postponed since the onset of the COVID pandemic.  During this time a smaller, Subject Matter Expert (SME) group members wishing to have ongoing discussions with the department about policy-level questions,  issues regarding the financial impact of the pandemic, reimbursement rates for Medicaid providers, long-term planning to deal with healthcare worker shortages, and how to bring more people into the workforce was established.  Members of this group are encouraged to continue these discussions through the re-establishment of the HB 12-1294 Stakeholder Forum.

Meetings will be held virtually monthly, on the 1st Thursday of each month. Our next stakeholder meeting will be held on December 1, 2022, from 2:00 to 3:00pm.

Additionally, pursuant to C.R.S 25-3-113, the Stakeholder Forum consists of representatives from various t in types of provider facilities licensed by the department along with consumers, consumer advocates, ombudsmen, and other interested parties which meet at least four times each year for the Department to discuss and take into consideration the concerns and issues of interest to the forum members and other attendees regarding the development and implementation of rules and other matters that affect all licensed health care facilities. QSEP: Quality in Focus Provider/Supplier Training

To: Providers and Suppliers Participating in Medicare and Medicaid Programs

From: CMS Training Coordinator – Tonie Miller

Greetings,

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed a series of interactive videos called “Quality in Focus” (QIF) on the Quality, Safety & Education Portal (QSEP). The 10-15 minute videos are self-paced. They will help providers and suppliers participating in the Medicare and Medicaid programs better understand how to improve health and safety in facilities.

The QIF series aims to increase the quality of care for people with Medicare and Medicaid by reducing the deficiencies most commonly cited during the CMS survey process, such as infection control and accident prevention. These resources will help providers and suppliers better understand surveyor evaluation criteria, recognize deficiencies, and incorporate solutions into their facilities’ standards of care, so they are more equipped to meet health and safety guidelines.

The QIF interactive videos are tailored for specific provider and supplier types, with 1-3 videos per type. Each interactive video focuses on a specific health or safety citation with the goal of identifying and resolving these deficiencies. QIF interactive videos are currently available for:

·        Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) Infection Control Citations

·        Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (IICF/IID) Program Implementation Citations

·        Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) Local, State, Tribal Collaboration Process Citations

·        Hospice Plan of Care Citations

·        Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) Post-Intervention Debriefing Citations

·        Long Term Care (LTC) Treatment and Prevention of Pressure Ulcer Citations

·        LTC Free of Accident Citations

·        LTC Medication Error Citations

·        Outpatient Physical Therapy (OPT) Equipment, Buildings, and Grounds Maintenance Citations

·        Comprehensive Outreach Rehabilitation Facility (CORF) Local, State, Tribal Collaboration Process Citations

·        Home Health Agency (HHA) Incomplete Individualized Plan of Care Citations

·        Rural Health Clinic (RHC) Preventative Maintenance Program Citations

·        Portable X-ray Personnel Monitoring Citations

·        End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Cleaning and Disinfecting Citations

·        Hospital Patient Safety

Please note that the information in the interactive videos is for informational purposes and is not meant to take the place of statutes, regulations, or official CMS policy.

Visit the Quality, Safety & Education Portal (QSEP) Training Catalog at https://qsep.cms.gov/ProvidersAndOthers/publictraining.aspx to access the “Quality in Focus” interactive videos. The videos can be found under the Quality in Focus tab.
