COVID-19 vaccination upon discharge from hospitals, emergency departments, and urgent care facilities

To: Hospitals, Emergency Departments and Trauma System

From: Colorado Dept. of Public Health & Environment

To promote access to COVID-19 vaccination and assist efforts to reach the national goal of 70% vaccination coverage by July 4th, we are encouraging vaccination administration at discharge to patients in hospitals, emergency departments (EDs), and urgent care facilities (UCs).

EDs serve as the primary—and often only—health care access point for up to a fifth of the U.S. population and UCs handle about 89 million patient visits each year, or more than 29% of all primary care visits in the country, and nearly 15% of all outpatient physician visits. Expanding COVID-19 vaccine availability via these settings can therefore increase access to vaccinations.

The attached document provides information of how jurisdictions can help promote this activity starting with enrolling facilities located in areas with a high Social Vulnerability Index rating before expanding to other areas.

Thank you!
