Stakeholders invited to provide input for Colorado HAI Advisory Committee

The Colorado Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Advisory Committee is seeking input on the potential addition of two metrics to HAI reporting. Stakeholders are invited to submit feedback by email or phone (as described below), or attend the upcoming meeting on 11/28/17. All meetings are open to the public.

At the upcoming HAI Advisory Committee meeting 11/28/17, the committee will review stakeholder input and vote on whether to add two metrics to HAI reporting via the HAI Disclosure Statute. The two metrics are:

1.      Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) data from emergency departments and observation units reported by acute care hospitals, and
2.      Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) data from wards reported by acute care hospitals.

Both types of data are already reported by facilities into the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reporting purposes. The addition of these metrics will require no additional work for facility staff. Access to these data will enable CDPHE to align with CMS and permit accurate comparisons.

Purpose of addition of CDI data from emergency departments and observation units (acute care hospitals):
·         Allow generation of the correct standardized infection ratios (SIR) for annual reports using the new CDC baseline, which requires this newly requested CDI data;
·         Verify data published by CDC in annual state progress reports;
·         Improve data validation;
·         Provide additional data for public health prevention initiatives.

Purpose of addition of CLABSI ward data (acute care hospitals):
·         Verify data published by CDC in annual state progress reports;
·         Evaluate utility of public reporting of CLABSI ward data by hospital for increased public transparency, which may include separate CLABSI ward reporting vs. all-facility reporting (combined ward/ICU);
·         Provide additional data for public health prevention initiatives.

We invite interested stakeholders to provide input about the collection and reporting of these new metrics. Input may be submitted to CDPHE in one of the following three ways:

1. Submit feedback to Tamara Hoxworth via email or phone at tamara.hoxworth@state.co.us or 303-692-2390 by noon, Monday 11/27/17;
3. Attend the meeting by teleconference (call-in information will be provided following RSVP); or
4. Attend the meeting in person (an RSVP must be received by close of business Tues. 11/21/17 to reserve a space).

To RSVP for phone or in-person attendance, contact Lynda Saignaphone at Lynda.saignaphone@state.co.us or 303-692-2923; call-in instructions, meeting time and location will be provided.
